"Big in Japan" (an Alphaville cover) and "No Speech" received a lot of airplay and the album was certified gold in Germany. The songs " Big in Japan", "No Speech", "Living in a Lie", and "Dödel Up" were issued as singles. In November 2000, Guano Apes released their second studio album, Don't Give Me Names, on BMG and GUN/Supersonic Records. The non-album single "Don't You Turn Your Back On Me" was contributed to the Meschugge film soundtrack in 1999.ĭon't Give Me Names and Walking on a Thin Line (2000–2005) "Open Your Eyes" appeared in the Warren Miller movie Fifty (1999) and Crusty 2000: The Metal Millennium (2000). The release of their debut album was followed by an 18-month tour of Europe and the United States. The songs " Lords of the Boards" and "Rain" were also issued as singles, with the former being specifically commissioned for the 1998 European Snowboarding Championship. The album peaked at number 4 in Germany and was certified platinum. The song was their first and most successful single, followed by the release in October 1997 of their debut album Proud Like a God on BMG and GUN/Supersonic Records. The band's career took off in 1996 after they won the "Local Heroes" competition held by VIVA, beating out over 1,000 competitors with their song " Open Your Eyes". But based on the fact that this album was sold in considerable circulation, the Guano Apes group can be congratulated, because their trick worked one hundred percent.Problems playing this file? To summarize: “Proud Like a God” was recorded according to one simple and well-known formula for every musician - we compose and record two absolute hits, shoot clips on them, a couple more good songs in the album, and everything else to fill in the disk space. The rest, so to speak, is not for everybody.Īlso of the advantages can be noted the so-called "syndrome of the beginning group", namely, the heavy sound of guitars, which gives the songs extremeness, and the cello that sounds in some ballads. Of these, we can distinguish “Never Born” with a non-standard structure and “Scapegoat” - an amazing thing with a catchy chorus. Indeed, the rest of the songs somehow fade compared to them, and they can be divided into two types: heavy, but absolutely uninteresting, based on one guitar riff and the super-powerful vocals of Sandra Nasich, who is trying uncontrollably to scream guitars as well as ballads and half ballads, among which there are good ones. And after the first listening to the album, it became clear that in addition to these two hits there was practically nothing to listen to. Then a clip for the song “Rain” was still shot, but it was practically not shown on TV. With "Proud Like a God", clips were shot for two of the most popular songs: "Open Your Eyes" and "Lords of the Boards", thanks to which this album received a crazy promotion.
